Estepona to honor the Spanish Legion with a dedicated public space in the city
The City Council approves this distinction in recognition of over a century of service during both international missions and national crises.
The Estepona Town Council has approved naming a public space after the Spanish Legion during its latest plenary session, in recognition of the work carried out by this elite unit of the Spanish Army. The decision, made during the April council meeting, seeks to highlight the commitment and dedication to service demonstrated by this military force, both in international missions and during crises within Spain.
Recognition of Over a Century of History
The proposal approved by the Estepona Town Council recognizes the Spanish Legion's history since its creation in 1920 by Royal Decree signed by King Alfonso XIII. Throughout its more than one hundred years of history, this military unit has been characterized by "its discipline, its fighting spirit, and rapid deployment capability in conflicts and international missions," according to the council document.
What began as a unit of Spanish and foreign volunteers has evolved into one of the most prestigious military units worldwide. Its professionalization over the years has positioned it as a benchmark in the innovation of military techniques, tactics, and procedures, achieving a high degree of efficiency and modernity.
A Fundamental Pillar in International Missions
One of the key aspects highlighted in the municipal proposal is the pioneering role the Legion has played in Spanish operations abroad under the United Nations flag. Since Spain began deploying forces overseas in 1989, the Legion has been present in numerous international scenarios.
The military unit initiated the mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992 and subsequently participated in various peacekeeping operations in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Iraq, the Congo, and Lebanon. Its presence has also been significant in Afghanistan and Mali, specializing in stabilization missions in crisis zones.

Humanitarian Aid in Critical Moments
The document approved by the Town Council also highlights the Legion's ability to deploy and operate in distant locations for extended periods, as well as to employ effective resources and adopt efficient procedures in all types of crises and conflicts. These qualities have made the Spanish Legion "one of the military corps closest to the people," as emphasized in the proposal.
In this regard, special mention is made of its efforts during the toughest times of the Covid-19 pandemic, when legionnaires performed "extraordinary aid work." More recently, their actions were also crucial in rescue and assistance efforts following the devastating effects of the severe weather phenomenon known as DANA in Valencia, demonstrating once again their commitment to civil society in emergency situations.
Strong Ties with Málaga and the Costa del Sol
The Legion's connection with the province of Málaga and the Costa del Sol region "is well known to everyone," according to the council document. This relationship is primarily evident through its participation in various Holy Week processions, an event of great cultural and religious significance in the region.
Furthermore, the Legion maintains an active presence in sporting events of significant national and international prominence, such as the 101 Kilometers of Ronda race, an event in which "a good number of athletes from Estepona participate each year," thereby strengthening the ties between the military institution and the local citizens.
Following previous recognitions of security forces
This tribute to the Spanish Legion is the latest in a series of honors the Estepona Town Council has bestowed upon various state security forces. The National Police, Guardia Civil, Local Police, and Civil Protection have all previously received the Council's backing for their public service and contribution to the city's progress.
With this new designation, the Estepona Town Council pays tribute to the Spanish Legion for the "spirit of dedication and commitment to service" shown throughout its history, both in military operations and humanitarian efforts.
A new addition to Estepona's cityscape
Although the approved proposal doesn't specify which exact location in the city will bear the name "Legión Española," this decision is part of the municipal policy of recognizing institutions that have contributed to the well-being and security of its citizens.
The naming of this public space marks a new milestone in the urban transformation Estepona has been undergoing in recent years, featuring the renovation of streets, squares, and facilities that have significantly improved the town's image and livability.

Commitment to democratic values
In its proposal, the Town Council wished to emphasize that this recognition of the Spanish Legion also honors its role in protecting "legality, freedom, and the democratic rule of law"—fundamental values shared by all security forces previously honored by the Council.
In doing so, Estepona joins other Spanish municipalities that have dedicated public spaces to this military unit, recognizing its historical contribution and its adaptation to new defense and security challenges within the Spanish constitutional framework.
