The Mirador del Carmen Contemporary Cultures Library Celebrates Its First Year
36,000 users and 200 events confirm the center’s success in its first year and establish Mirador del Carmen as a cultural landmark on the Costa del Sol.
The Contemporary Cultures Library of Estepona at the Mirador del Carmen celebrates its first year and is establishing itself as the cultural epicenter of the Costa del Sol, with nearly 36,000 visitors, over 200 activities, and 4,000 book loans. On December 19th, Elvira Lindo, Pepón Nieto, and Alondra Bentley will headline the official anniversary event.
The municipal facility, located across eight floors of the Mirador del Carmen Sociocultural Centre, has exceeded all expectations in its first twelve months of operation. The figures reveal a transformative impact on Estepona’s cultural scene: nearly 36,000 people have passed through its doors since opening, establishing this space as a new benchmark both locally and nationally.
The library has proved particularly successful in connecting with younger audiences, who account for approximately 40% of users in this first year. This figure reflects the success of the centre’s design as a transversal, dynamic cultural space equipped with cutting-edge technology to meet contemporary needs.
Anniversary programme with leading cultural figures
The official first anniversary celebration will take place on Thursday 19 December at 8:00 p.m.. The event will feature acclaimed writer Elvira Lindo and actor Pepón Nieto, and will conclude with an acoustic concert by singer Alondra Bentley. Admission will be free until the seating capacity of the cultural centre’s concert hall is reached.
This anniversary event reflects the high standard of programming that has characterised the facility throughout the year, attracting some of the most prominent figures in Spanish-language culture.
200 activities for all audiences
The library has maintained an intense and varied cultural schedule that has generated a constant flow of activity. In total, it has hosted around 200 events, including:
46 guided visits for children
21 talks and dialogues
20 book presentations
18 guided visits for adults
13 reading clubs for adults
12 concerts
5 film screenings
3 children’s reading clubs
2 exhibitions on Calle Terraza (Coco Dávez and Manuel Moreno)
Multiple workshops for children and adults
In addition, the centre has hosted the award ceremonies for the last two editions of the Estepona International Poetry Prize, including meetings with the winning authors.
National projection of cultural talent
The Contemporary Cultures Library has not only revitalised the local cultural offer, but has also positioned Estepona on Spain’s cultural map. It has welcomed leading figures such as Cervantes Prize winner Sergio Ramírez, filmmaker Oliver Laxe, writers Andrés Trapiello, Mara Torres and Megan Maxwell, artists Soleá Morente and Anni B Sweet, and renowned poets such as Elvira Sastre and Luis García Montero.
This capacity to attract talent has turned the facility into a key meeting point for lovers of literature, cinema, music and the arts in general.
FLEST consolidates Estepona as a literary destination
The Estepona Literary Festival (FLEST) has become one of the cornerstones of the centre’s annual programme. This festival, which breaks down barriers between genres and disciplines, has brought together more than 8,000 people in its first two editions, making it one of the most attractive literary events on the Spanish cultural scene.
FLEST also stands out for its inclusive and community-based approach, involving local social organisations such as the Aprona Foundation and the San Isidro Brotherhood, and working closely with bookshops across the province to democratise access to culture.
4,000 loans and a growing catalogue
The library’s lending service has recorded 4,000 book loans in this first year, a figure that reflects active use of its extensive bibliographic catalogue. Users can access the service with the membership card of the Andalusian Public Libraries Network, which can be requested in person at the Mirador del Carmen library or online at www.bibliotecasdeandalucia.es.
The facility aims to become “an extension of the home” for Estepona residents, offering a space where they can enjoy a unique cultural and technological experience.
