PSOE proposes converting the former tourist office at the port into housing for young people and working families
The motion will be debated at the next Estepona City Council Plenary.
The PSOE Group in Estepona has submitted a motion to rehabilitate the former tourist office at the port and convert it into affordable rental housing for young people and working families. The proposal will be discussed at the next municipal plenary.
The PSOE Group in Estepona has presented a motion to the City Council to rehabilitate the former tourist office at the port and transform it into rental housing aimed at young people and working families. The proposal will be debated at the upcoming Plenary, addressing the growing issue of housing accessibility in Estepona.
According to PSOE spokesperson, Mrs. Molina, the lack of affordable rental options is making it difficult for many young people to become independent and for families to develop professionally. “In Estepona, high housing prices prevent many young people from living on their own, which hampers their personal and professional development,” Molina stated.
The building, currently unused, spans approximately 800 square meters and is located in a prime area of the port. PSOE members highlight that converting the building into public or subsidized housing is a viable option, thanks to the Urgent Measures Decree-Law by the Regional Government of Andalusia. This legislation allows for housing to be developed on public-use land without the need to modify urban planning, streamlining the process.
“We have an unused municipal building, a clear housing crisis in Estepona, and regional legislation that enables action without bureaucratic hurdles. The logical step is to put this space to use for those who need it most,” said the PSOE spokesperson.
The lack of affordable housing is one of the most pressing issues in Estepona, especially for young people and working families. In a municipality dominated by luxury homes and high real estate prices, PSOE's proposal seeks to address one of the town's most significant social challenges.
PSOE has directly called on Estepona's mayor, José María García Urbano, to take urgent action regarding the housing crisis. “The housing problem in Estepona is not a coincidence; it’s the result of an urban planning policy focused solely on luxury homes,” Molina pointed out. According to the spokesperson, this situation has led to young people and families being “expelled” from their own city due to unaffordable rent prices.
Additionally, the motion includes plans to prepare the necessary technical and legal reports to assess the project's feasibility, as well as explore public management options to ensure the housing remains affordable.
PSOE's motion represents one of the first concrete initiatives to address the housing crisis affecting many Estepona residents. If approved, it would mark a significant step in the fight for equitable access to housing for the municipality’s most vulnerable groups.
