Estepona to Host Key Stage Finish in 2026 Vuelta a España
Refugio de Peñas Blancas will welcome a decisive arrival on September 11 during the race’s third week
Estepona returns to the world map of professional cycling. The municipality will host one of the most decisive stages of the 2026 Vuelta a España on September 11, featuring a high-mountain stage finish at Refugio de Peñas Blancas, in the heart of Sierra Bermeja.
La Vuelta Returns to Sierra Bermeja
Mayor José María García Urbano confirmed the news today during a meeting with representatives from Club Unión Ciclista Virgen del Carmen. The stage will take place during the race’s third week, a traditionally decisive moment for the general classification.
The route will enter the municipal area from the Guadalmina zone and pass through various points in the city before tackling the demanding climb to Alto de Peñas Blancas. La Vuelta will previously transit through several points in Málaga province before reaching Estepona.
Worldwide Media Exposure
“This is the best promotional event we could have. Millions of people through media outlets in up to 200 countries around the world will be able to see Estepona from impressive aerial views,” García Urbano emphasized. The mayor highlighted that broadcasts will showcase the municipality’s entire natural environment live.
Refugio de Peñas Blancas already made history in 2013 by becoming the first summit finish of La Vuelta in Málaga province. Now, thirteen years later, the natural enclave of Sierra Bermeja will once again surprise the international peloton and cycling fans worldwide.

Activities for All Citizens
Estepona’s Town Hall is already working on organizing various parallel activities so the entire community can participate in the event, following the approach from previous editions when La Vuelta passed through the municipality.
García Urbano thanked La Vuelta’s general director, Javier Guillén, “for counting on Estepona once again,” as well as the Provincial Council of Málaga and its president Francisco Salado for their direct collaboration in making this stage possible.
The date is set: on September 11, 2026, Estepona will experience one of the year’s biggest sporting events, consolidating its position as a premier destination for major international competitions.
