Estepona hosts a unique exhibition at the Centro Cultural Mirador del Carmen, offering an up-close look at the work in progress of renowned painter and sculptor Antonio López. Under the title ‘Desvelar la realidad’, the exhibition features more than 60 years of López’s artistic evolution and highlights, for the first time, the previously unseen work ‘Frentes y perfiles. César’, a nude that the artist began creating in 2017 and is now being shown to the public for the first time. The exhibition will be open to the public until July 20, 2025.
The Exhibition
The exhibition hall at the Centro Cultural Mirador del Carmen in Estepona showcases one of the most complete and significant collections of Spanish realism. The show includes 12 of Antonio López's latest works, focusing on his artistic evolution from the 1960s to the present, including two of his most recent views of Madrid’s Gran Vía, still in progress. One of the standout pieces is ‘Frentes y perfiles. César’, a work where the artist explores the theme of the nude, a recurring subject in his work, using techniques such as pencil, oil, and collage of vegetal paper on paper.
The exhibition ‘Desvelar la realidad’, organized by the Estepona City Council and curated by María Toral, offers a journey through more than 80 works by artists of the caliber of Esperanza Parada, Amalia Avia, Carmen Laffón, and Cristóbal Toral, among others. The show covers the evolution of figurative painting in Spain from 1956 to 2021, providing a clear view of the transformations that have shaped the development of this artistic style in the country.
Among the artists featured, several have close ties to Antonio López, including his brothers Julio and Francisco López, and his wife María Moreno. The works come from prominent institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Ávila Foundation, as well as private collections and the artists' families.
A Tribute to Spanish Realism
The exhibition is a tribute to the great masters of Spanish realism, featuring a diversity of genres that include the human figure, still lifes, landscapes, and interior scenes. These themes allow visitors to delve into the world of figurative painting through a journey that reflects the artists’ commitment and dedication to building images with deep sensitivity and rigor.
The curating of the exhibition emphasizes diversity and technique, enriching the visitor's experience and allowing them to appreciate the artists' ability to develop their own unique style while influencing the current artistic landscape.
