Estepona invests in new sports facilities: renovation of the San Fernando complex, velodrome, and covered swimming pool
The city is driving several sports projects for the current legislature, including a new football field in Cancelada and new infrastructures in various areas.
Estepona's City Council is moving forward with its plan to expand sports infrastructures. The most prominent projects include the renovation of the San Fernando sports complex, the construction of a velodrome with a football and rugby field, and the highly anticipated covered municipal swimming pool. The necessary procedures for these facilities are already underway, with the goal of completing them during this legislature.
Estepona continues to make strides in improving its sports infrastructures with several key projects that will be carried out in the coming months. Among them, the renovation of the San Fernando sports complex stands out, one of the city's most emblematic facilities. This renovation will also include a new parking area. However, the project is still in a crucial administrative phase since the land is owned by the Junta de Andalucía. Currently, a land-use transfer is underway between the Junta and the City Council to allow for a major investment in the area.
Another highly anticipated project is the construction of a velodrome in the Monterrosa River area. This sports venue will feature not only a cycling track but also an indoor football or rugby field. Administrative procedures are already in progress, and construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024.
Covered municipal swimming pool and more sports facilities
One of the most demanded infrastructures by the citizens is the covered municipal swimming pool. The City Council has already decided to execute this project within the current legislature, and the most suitable location for its construction is being assessed. Among the options are areas such as the one above the auditorium, near the Carmen sports center, or near the José Ramón de la Morena sports complex. Municipal technicians are evaluating factors like the size of the land, accessibility, and proximity to residential areas to make the final decision.
In parallel, there are plans to acquire land for the construction of additional sports facilities in various areas of the city, including some plots that are not yet municipal property. Negotiations are underway, with the aim of expanding the sports infrastructure available to the public.
New football field in Cancelada
Additionally, the construction of a new football field in Cancelada is already underway. The project was recently awarded, and it is part of an overall plan to provide the municipality with more sports facilities, especially for young people. This new field will help meet the growing demand for spaces to practice sports.
With these projects, the Estepona City Council reaffirms its commitment to improving the city's sports infrastructure. These new facilities will not only encourage physical activity and sports among young people but will also provide modern and well-equipped spaces for the enjoyment of all citizens. With construction work set to begin in the coming months, Estepona will continue to progress as a leading destination for sports infrastructure on the Costa del Sol.
