Estepona approves IBI tax reduction that will save households over 6 million euros
The tax cut affects nearly 38,000 homes, with an average 20% reduction in the IBI bill.
The Estepona City Council has begun applying the largest tax cut in the city’s history. Nearly 38,000 households will see an average 20% reduction in their IBI bill, resulting in a total savings of over six million euros. This measure will take effect in the next IBI bill, which will be issued between August and September.
Estepona has launched a fiscal plan that will bring relief to local residents. The City Council, led by José María García Urbano, has approved a reduction in the Property Tax (IBI), with nearly 38,000 homes set to receive an average 20% discount. The total economic impact of this measure amounts to 6.1 million euros. This reduction will be reflected in the IBI bills for this fiscal year, which will be issued between August and September.
The reduction has been made possible by the liquidation of the debt inherited from previous administrations. As explained by the mayor in recent statements, after settling the municipality’s financial obligations, resources have been redirected to reduce the fiscal burden on residents, specifically in the IBI tax. This cut is just the latest in a series of initiatives that have allowed the City Council to reduce the property tax by 50% since 2011.
With this measure, Estepona’s residents will benefit from significant savings in their annual expenses, directly impacting their quality of life. Moreover, the IBI tax reduction aligns with the City Council’s fiscal policy, which remains committed to reducing taxes as long as the municipality’s financial health permits.
New Fiscal Initiatives
In addition to the IBI tax reduction, another fiscal measure has been introduced to encourage recycling. The Estepona City Council has announced a 3% reduction in the waste collection fee for citizens who make at least three deliveries of waste to the city’s recycling center. This discount will apply to waste that cannot be disposed of in regular public containers, such as electronic devices, oils, and furniture.
To access this benefit, citizens will need to submit an application to the Provincial Tax Collection Office during the first quarter of 2026, providing the necessary documentation. This new measure aims to promote more efficient waste management in the municipality and reward residents who contribute to environmental improvement.
Estepona has implemented several tax reductions over the past years, particularly for the waste collection fee, benefiting residents in vulnerable situations, such as retirees or long-term unemployed individuals.
The IBI tax reduction is only part of a broader fiscal plan that will continue to be assessed for future tax cuts. The City Council has assured that it will keep exploring ways to ease the fiscal burden on Estepona’s citizens, in a context where the municipality’s improved financial situation allows for such measures.
