Estepona allocates €433,000 for La Hermandad Park works
Opposition denounces park will cost double due to "mismanagement"
Estepona City Council has opened the tender for stabilizing La Hermandad Park with an investment of €433,083, following landslides caused by winter rains. The Socialist opposition criticizes that the total cost of the park amounts to €1.15 million due to failure to claim guarantees from the construction company.
La Hermandad Park returns to the center of Estepona's political debate following the publication of the tender for ground stabilization works, valued at €433,083.22 VAT included. The actions seek to definitively solve the landslide problems that affected the park after the intense rainfall of October and November 2024.
What works will be carried out exactly?
The planned action contemplates the construction of three four-meter-high riprap walls with their corresponding concrete foundations. These walls aim to provide greater stability to the ground by reducing the inclination of the existing slope.
Between the walls, tree specimens that do not require water will be located and a pedestrian path will be traced connecting to Letonia Street, in addition to interior roads. The internal road network and main square will also be repaired, as will the lakes in the southern area.
The technical problem according to the City Council
Municipal technical reports determine that the special characteristics of the terrain, composed of clayey materials, have caused heavy rainfall to create excess hydration that generates "lubrication and excess weight, which ruin the existing slope by bowl sliding."
This situation has affected urban equipment, infrastructure and the pedestrian path, which have had their access restricted for safety reasons.
The Socialist opposition's version
Emma Molina, spokesperson for the Socialist Group, offers a different version of events. According to the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party), the park initially cost more than €720,000 and was executed by the company LICUAS, then in charge of the municipal Parks and Gardens service.
According to the Socialist party's allegations, after the 2024 and 2025 rains, the slope gave way, and they criticize that the City Council has not claimed the bond or executed the corresponding two-year guarantee.
Why wasn't the guarantee claimed?
The Socialist spokesperson denounces that her party requested in plenary session seven months ago that the company be claimed for the repair through the bond and guarantee, but according to their statements "the City Council did absolutely nothing."
This management has caused, according to PSOE calculations, that Estepona residents end up paying €1.15 million for this park: the initial €720,000 plus €433,000 for the new works.
