AEMET issues high temperature warning for Estepona
Temperatures reach 39 degrees with extreme heat risk alert activated until 9:00 PM.
AEMET issues warning as Estepona records high temperatures nearing 39 degrees, making it one of Spain's hottest spots. At 5:50 PM on Friday, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) recorded 38.9 degrees, ranking the town of Estepona among the country's hottest locations. Vélez-Málaga was the second hottest area in the province, reaching 38.3 degrees at 3:10 PM.
The extreme heat has also affected other areas along the Costa del Sol, with notable records such as 37.2°C measured on Málaga's Paseo de la Farola at 7:00 PM, and 37.1°C in Benahavís. Additionally, the Guadalteba reservoir in the Guadalhorce Valley recorded 36.7°C.
The heatwave isn’t limited to Estepona but extends across the entire province of Málaga, where Aemet has issued a yellow heat alert. The warning will remain in effect all day Sunday, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with temperatures potentially reaching 39°C in some areas. Affected regions include the Costa del Sol, Guadalhorce-Málaga, and Axarquía.
High temperatures in Estepona
The high temperatures not only affect the comfort of residents and tourists but also increase the risk of fires and heatstroke. The municipality of Estepona, known for its warm climate, is currently experiencing one of the most intense summers, increasing pressure on public services and local healthcare systems.
Warm Terral winds
Heat is not the only factor to consider in this extreme weather episode. Aemet has also warned about the presence of warm Terral winds coming from North Africa. These winds, known for their ability to increase the perceived temperature, will reach gusts of up to 19 km/h from the west. This phenomenon, typical during periods of high temperatures, will intensify the heat and hinder natural cooling in the area, so additional precautions are recommended.
